Day 25: Art!

  

Have you ever heard of cob homes?

     Well you should open up your computer and do a little research on this... Cob homes are making a change in the way people are living their lives. You're probably thinking... What in the hell is cob and why would I want to build my house out of it? Well, cob has been used to centuries for make low energy and sustainable homes.

     What exactly is cob? Well it has nothing to do with corn, so lets just start by throwing that out the window. Cob is a cement like mixture consisting of clay, sand, straw, earth and water. May I also mention that cob is fireproof and resistant to seismic activity?

     Oh yeah, cob is also incredibly low energy. Since it's so durable you don't have to worry about your cob home flying away with a hurricane or crumbling during an earthquake seeing as most homes made with the cob building material stand for sometimes hundreds of years, if not a hundred at least. Homes made from this material are also amazing at sustaining energy. Because cob is so dense during the summer it stays very cool inside, while during the winter the walls allow for very little heat to escape.

Not to mention that they look like hobbit houses...

     I thank my good friends Ashley and Andrew for even telling me about this because without them I probably would have never even heard of cob. I hope that one day when Josh and I decide to build a home that we can build with this material. Did I mention that it is CRAZY inexpensive to build with cob? Look it up. Can you say four bedroom house for $30,000? But not all cob houses look like hobbit holes either... Since you can basically build and shape the cob into any form you want, you have freedom to make your house genuinely one of a kind. Be it hobbit hole, modern sleek, or hippie dippy land.
